According to Rivals.com, the University of Kentucky football program currently has 21 players committed to the 2011 recruiting class.
Of those 21 players, 17 are rated as three-star recruits by Rivals.
One member of the class is rated as a four-star recruit and one member is not rated at all. The other two are rated as two-star recruits.
There are no five-star recruits in the 2011 class.
For the sake of comparison, Alabama has 19 players committed for 2011.
Of those 19, 12 are rated as four-star recruits, 2 are rated as five-star (the highest rating) and 5 are rated as three-star.
At LSU, the program has commitments from 1 five-star, 7 four-stars and and 9 three-stars.
To make a long story short, Kentucky is having a difficult time keeping up with top-level football programs in the SEC. This has long been the case and unless something changes, will likely continue to be an Achilles heel to the Wildcat program.
High-level recruits are bigger, faster, stronger and more talented than mid-level recruits. That is why they are high-level recruits.
Will Joker Phillips and his staff be able to land more top-level recruits?
That’s a question that remains to be answered.
Will Kentucky ever compete for an SEC Championship in football?
That’s an answer that will come from the stars.
Average “Stars” from the SEC in the 2011 Classes:
– Alabama 3.84
– LSU 3.53
– Florida 3.47
– Georgia 3.44
– Mississippi 3.32
– Auburn 3.31
– Tennessee 3.21
– South Carolina 3.16
– Arkansas 3.00
– Mississippi State 3.00
– Kentucky 2.81

It doesn’t take a mathematical scholar to see that Kentucky must improve its recruiting in order to reach the “next level” in the Southeastern Conference.
