Wayne Turner Joins The UK Men’s Basketball Staff

The University of Kentucky and Coach John Calipari announced today that Kentucky’s very own Wayne Turner will be joining the UK Men’s basketball staff as an undergraduate student assistant coach.

Turner, who was a member of the 1997 team that lost in OT to Arizona and a member of the 96 and 98 Championship teams, is currently finishing his undergraduate degree at UK.

Wayne will assist in pre, during and post-practice, and will primarily focus on working with UK’s guards. What a great asset to add to UK’s current Coaching staff. A young man who was actively involved in three Final Games, winning it all twice and almost single handidly bringing the Cats back from a 18 point deficit to Duke in the 98 tourney.

“I’m really excited to be back in school getting my degree and to have an opportunity to work with the basketball team,” Turner said. “Coach Cal is one of the best, if not the best coach in the world, and who better to learn from. I’m looking forward to the season and feel like I can give some great advice to the players.”

Wayne finished his four year career at Kentucky as the NCAA’s all-time games played leader with 151. Turner ranks 41st all time in scoring with 1,170 points, 4th all time in assists with 494, 1st all time in steals at UK with 238 and was named the 1998 NCAA Regional Most Outstanding Player.

“I’m so happy to be able to bring back a player and person of Wayne’s stature to our program. What’s also neat is that we get to help guys like Wayne or Tony Delk or Scott Padgett – all guys who are members of our family – to get their start in coaching and help them pursue their next goals in life,” Coach Calipari said.
