Way Too Honest (and Late) Draft Recap

If you want to hear a puff piece about how GREAT Cleveland did on draft night and how every team frolicked through fields of daisies, then you may want to go back to crocheting that sweater. This recap comes from the depths of my angered soul. I’m not going to give “grades” on every team, this isn’t middle school. I only care about relevant teams as it pertains to The University of Kentucky. That’s the only reason we care about anything related to the NBA, right?

My first thoughts are about the Cavaliers and their absolutely dreadful puke of a draft. They had the #1 and #4 picks and took a dump with them and smeared it all over beautiful downtown Cleveland. I’ve made it clear that I thought Irving wasn’t a great pick, but I thought had they miraculously gotten Williams or Kanter it would have evened out. Instead, they got Tristian “13 ppg in the Big 12” Thompson. You want to know how bad a pick that was? Thompson had only 13 games total with double digit rebounds. His worst rebounding games came against the huge (but not smart looking) “NBA” frontline of Kansas. In 59 total minutes against the Jayhawks, Double T got 8 total rebounds. Whoa! Can you say “Impact”? Because Thompson can’t.

The truest grade I found on the internet for the Cav’s was a D from The Bleacher Report (by the way, is their website just awful or did I all of a sudden forget how to use the internet?). If I did give a grade it would have been a D, only one notch higher than an F because they didn’t draft a complete bum like me.

The Pistons actually did a fantastic job of drafting its rookies. Brandon Knight was an absolute steal at #8 and Detroit had to take him. He will only be their 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] point guard on the team and word has it, Joe Dumars is looking to replace Stuckey as the franchise point man. While Kyle Singler won’t win any “Sexiest Vampire of the year” awards, he does bring a killer offense to Detroit. Now, the team just has to make sure they play all their games at night. Vernon Macklin is a Gator, so I hesitate to write anything positive about him. I mean, really hesitate.

Utah did what they had to do to get Kanter, but what’s up with drafting Burks? I truly believe that if Doron Lamb had declared for the draft, he could have gone at #12. He is a little smaller than Burks, but he’s younger and is twice the 3 point shooter Burks is. While we’re on the subject of “woulda, shoulda, coulda”, Terrence Jones, had he stayed in the draft, would have gone to the Cavaliers instead of Thompson. So when you ask yourself “Why didn’t Terrence Jones stay in the draft?” You’ll have an answer; he would have played for Cleveland.

What’s up with the Knicks? I’m not talking about paying 1 million dollars for Jorts. I’m referring to drafting a dude named “Iman”. Sure he averaged 17 points per game at Georgia Tech, but if you are drafting a defensive stopper he doesn’t need to score on an offensively loaded Knicks team. Between Melo, Chauncey and Amarie taking 50 shots per game, who else has the chance to shoot? New York should have gone for the longer, better shooting Deandre Liggins; if for no other reason than to help Spike Lee with the trash talking.

I will end this on a positive note. The Washington Wizards absolutely blasted a homerun with their picks. I absolutely love the Vesely kid. I know I made fun of him in my last draft article, but his mixtape blew me away. John Wall is going to have some fun playing with him. Chris Singleton and Shelvin Mack are very smart pickups as well. The Wizards are going to be one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the next couple of years, because they will be young and freakishly athletic.

Thanks to all the bone headed draft choices, this has been an entertaining draft to cover. It also helps when you have 4 Kentucky Wildcats drafted in it.
