Volleyball Team Begins NCAA Tournament at Purdue

The UK Women’s Volleyball team begins the NCAA tournament this Friday at Purdue. This from UKAthletics.com:

For a school-record sixth consecutive season the Kentucky volleyball team was selected to the field of 64 teams for the NCAA Tournament it was announced Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on the tournament’s No. 16 overall seed in Purdue on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Middle Tennessee State and Louisville round out the competition UK could face in the second round.

This marks the second time in the [URL=”http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/w-volley/mtt/skinner_craig00.html”][COLOR=#0061aa]Craig Skinner[/COLOR][/URL] era that UK (17-13, 11-9 SEC) will meet Purdue in West Lafayette in the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky and Purdue last played in the tournament in 2006 with the Boilermakers earning a 3-0 victory in the second round of play.

[B]NCAA Tournament notes[/B]
• Kentucky is making a school-record sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its 12th in school history. Overall, the Wildcats are 11-11 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, twice advancing to the regional finals.
• The Wildcats made their first NCAA appearance in 1983, advancing to the regional finals before falling to Hawaii, 3-1. UK returned to the regional finals in 1987, falling to Texas in four games.
• The Cats have had five players earn NCAA All-Region Tournament team honors in school history, with the last being current UK senior [URL=”http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/w-volley/mtt/rapp_lauren00.html”][COLOR=#0061aa]Lauren Rapp[/COLOR][/URL] in 2009.
• Kentucky’s win against No. 20 Ohio in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament marked the Cats’ first NCAA Tournament victory since the 1992 campaign.
• Kentucky advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 a season ago, marking the first time UK had advanced to the round of 16 since 1993. It also was the first time Kentucky had won two NCAA matches in the same season since 1989.

He is the only UK coach to direct his team to the national tournament in every season coached.
