UK’s Secret Weapon – "The Calzone!"

With a small lineup, the CATS are looking for ways to firm up their defense heading into the Maui invitational. Playing a zone, might be one way to do that (don’t let Billy “Man to Man” Gillispie hear that..joke).

Here’s an excerpt from the CJ’s Brett Dawson..
[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
The zone has been a four-letter defense for most of John Calipari’s career, but the University of Kentucky basketball coach has added one to his playbook, and the Wildcats might employ it during this week’s Maui Invitational.

Just don’t ask them to explain it.

The Calzone, apparently, defies description.

“It’s a funky — it’s not a traditional zone,” Calipari said. “It’s a little bit of a crazy, funky zone that we’re going to start using, that I’ll probably use over in Maui. It’s a combination of a couple different zones that we’re just going to throw at people and see what happens.”

So far, No. 12 Kentucky (2-0) has been just fine playing man-to-man.
I”m glad we got a coach that understands he has to find the right system for the players he has on his team. It seems Calipari might not be sold on the idea of playing a Zone, but he’s definitely looking for ways to get better.

Here’s my favorite excerpt from the article… It seems mass chaos/confusion could be our strategy of the future…
But UK’s lack of size in the post — despite the Cats’ overall length, only Harrellson and Eloy Vargas are taller than 6-8 — means Calipari might have to experiment when his team faces opponents with a stronger presence in the paint.

So the Calzone could see the light of day.

And Calipari hopes it’s as hard to attack as it is to describe.

“The good thing about when your team is confused about what they’re doing in a zone?” Calipari said. “There’s no way the other team could figure out what you’re doing, because we’re confused. So how do they know what we’re doing?”
You can read the entire article here…
