Midfield was confident. Coach Darrell Barber felt his team’s combination of athletes could make it hard for Trevor Lacey.

The Butler senior came into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A semifinal averaging 32.3 points per game. The reigning Mr. Basketball on the top-ranked team finished with just 19 points in Butler’s 64-42 victory at the BJCC.

“We had a plan in place,” Barber said, expressing no disrespect to Lacey. “Everyone goes in the game worrying about what they want to do to stop Trevor. We wanted to attack him, get him in a little foul trouble and just harass him and give him a bunch of different looks and contest his shots.”
The state’s top prospect had 11 points at the half and missed 10 shots. He missed six of his seven three-point tries. The No. 3 Patriots held him to his low point total in the playoffs. He had a season-low 16 earlier this year in a blowout win where he wasn’t allowed to shoot.

“They had big guards that were the just same size and me and just as physical,” Lacey said. “I was stronger than other guards around my area, but they were just as strong as me. I had to use some of my quickness. They were big and strong. They put a little different touch to me that I hadn’t seen all year.”
