I remember when Kentucky was considering Minnesota exile Royce White. You remember White? He was the one who was caught cheating in high school and cussed out his teacher for catching him. Then at Minnesota, he was caught stealing $100 worth of merchandise from Macy’s in the Mall of America and assaulted the security guard who caught him (source). White was a 5-star PF (#19 overall) coming out of the class of 2009.
I refused to add White to WildcatRecruits.com as a consideration until it was too obvious to ignore (he had declared a final three of Iowa State, Baylor and Kentucky). Then, when I begrudgingly added him, I hoped with everything in me that Cal was not really considering him and I rejoiced with relief when he picked Iowa State.
Now, FoxSports.com is reporting that Kentucky is showing interest in Wake Forest exile Tony Woods (source). Have you heard about Woods? He just plead guilty to misdemeanor assault. Evidently he was arrested in September and was charged with kicking and pushing the mother of his infant son – causing a fracture of her spine. Really? What kind of superstar would you have to be for people to overlook beating a woman in front of her infant son? I mean, I realize that he was a 5-star C (#20 overall) from the class of 2008, but I don’t care if he averaged 20 and 20, that sort of thing is inexcusable. Plus, I’ll raise the same issue I raised with White – Kentucky doesn’t NEED Tony Woods. They already have the #1 class this year, what does he have to offer besides more fodder for Pete Thamel? He’s not that desirable as a player. He’s not that desirable as a character. He’s not that desirable in terms of need.
One more thing to consider. Tony Woods can’t enroll until next semester wherever he goes, and then he will have to sit out a year, so he’s looking at playing for the 2011-2012 year. That’s the year we already have commitments from Davis, Wiltjer, Teague and Gilchrist – yep, already another #1 class. Take a look at our other options for that year here and let me know if you can honestly say “yes, please, we’ve gotta have that Woods kid…” Because personally, I think he’s just going to be another distraction.
