The Impact Of DeAndre Daniels Decision

DeAndre Daniels seems to be a no brainer for Coach Calipari and the Cats. In A previous article entitled Sunday Afternoon Waiting List, we discussed the current Daniels recruiting situation in a short 30 second read.

A Line in that paragraph stated, “This decision could place Kentucky in a position to be a front runner for a Final Four or even an eighth banner”.

We’ve seen the young talent on display in Canada. Never mind those who point to Ohio States blow out last year against these same teams, remember, UK played with no Kanter, no Vargas and Jones for only 9 minutes.

Daniels could be the addition that would allow the Cats to challenge the top teams in the country and Dick Weiss of the NY Daily News agrees.

Weiss tweeted the following thought Sunday evening:

”if 6-7 f d’andre daniels of woodland hills, calif– reneged tex– reclassifies to 2010 and signs with uk, john cal could challnge duke as 1″

Daniels would sure up the front line, give Kentucky another scoring threat, a great rebounder and someone who can play inside or out. His presence would create a bench deep enough to sub, with talent, at will.

Kanter, Vargas, Harrellson, Jones and then Daniels may give Kentucky the most talented front line in college basketball. UK still has to get Kanter eligible, and he’s the cornerstone.

From a future recruiting stand point, there’s no reason to hold back for someone in the 2011 Class. If Daniels accepted, Kentucky would have no less then three scholarships available going into next year. Gilchrist, Teague and Davis all have slots, even if no one goes to the NBA early.

It would be nice to keep Kanter, Jones and Knight, but the odds seem very low. All three are projected as lottery picks in every mock draft I’ve seen. That would free up an additional three scholarships making room for names like Austin Rivers, LeBryan Nash, Adonis Thomas and Ky Madden.

Plus, if for some reason Kanter didn’t gain eligibility for the 2010-11 season, it gives Kentucky a desperately needed big to play on the front line.

The addition of Daniels places another weapon at Calipari’s disposal. If he indeed reclassifies and ends up being cleared by the NCAA and UK, then the decision to offer should be an easy one for Coach Calipari … All Daniels has to do is accept.
