At 2:00am this morning when the Kentucky Wildcats landed in Lexington, the chants of “One More Year” officially began. Coach John Calipari posted a 3 minutes video on his Facebook page showing the some 200 fans cheering on the team when they returned. In the video, John Wall, Eric Bledsoe and DeMarcus Cousins walked together to greet the fans as they loudly cheered “One More Year” trying to show them the fans support for another UK season. Of course we do, this has been a fun season to watch.

“One More Year”, although it would be fantabulous, seems very unlikely from my perspective. I won’t rule anything out but the prospect of making $75,000 – $100,000 per week would be tough for anyone to overlook. That is the kind of money some of the top NBA picks will be looking at next year when they are picked high in the draft. That is the kind of money that four of our starters from this year could be looking at.
The reality is that returning to college for another year doesn’t provide them with any benefit, unless they truly have a personal goal of winning the NCAA tournament. Another year in college only brings risk; risk of injury, risk of going against tougher competition next year on the court and in the draft and ultimately the risk of losing a lot of money. Sure, a few of them might increase their positioning but the four starters, John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe and Patrick Patterson, are already ranked high and improving would be tough.
So, although it is very unlikely that we’ll see all of them return, or even any of them return, Wildcat fans cannot lose hope. All we can do is join those that are already chanting “One More Year” and contribute to that campaign in our own way. This is my contribution.
