Football

That Same Ole Feeling

I haven’t had that feeling in a while. If you have been going to Commonwealth Stadium you have definitely felt it before. Almost, could’ve, should’ve….The Wildcats battle back and then get beat in the final seconds. Textbook Kentucky football. I want to talk about some of the reasons the game ended the way it did.

[*]Defense in the first half. The Kentucky defense was nonexistent in the opening half. Cam Newton was playing his own personal video game, as he was slinging it around and running through our line like it was swiss cheese. I am always scared of teams that have a quarterback that can run and throw. Newton is the defiinition of a versatile quarterback, and he dominated the Cats anytime his coach let him, which leads me to my next point.
[*]Why did Auburn quit running the football? If I am an Auburn fan, I am wondering why the heck did the Tigers decide to totally go away from the 1st half gameplan? I believe Auburn played more of a factor of the game being so close, and ultimately causing the last second field goal.
[*]Stopping 3rd and long. I hate 3rd downs! I have quit standing up and yelling on 3rd down because it is almost a guarantee when it is 3rd and 10 or more the opposing team will find an open receiver and a big gain will ensue. Maybe I am wrong, and the stats may prove it, but do the Cats every stop anyone on 3rd and long?
[*]Kicking the field goal to tie instead of going for the win. Kentucky has nothing to lose, right? Why did they decide to kick the field goal when everyone in Commonwealth knew that Newton could run the ball at will and drive the ball down the field? I said as soon as we kicked the field goal, exactly what was going to happen. We gave Auburn a chance to go back to their original gameplan and let them run the clock out and win by 3.
These are my key points which contributed to the final outcome last night. Randall Cobb did everything he could do, and was definitely the leader we so badly needed. He tried to put the Cats on his back, but the UK defense eventually was just too much to carry. There are a lot of positives, and I am sure we will talk about them on the Big Blue Breakdown this week. Make sure you check it out. Go Cats!!
