Tailgating 101

Football season will be here before we know it and that means it will be time to get our tailgate on! There are various ins and outs of tailgating so what better time to review them than now. You need to be prepared to have the envy of all tailgates in the parking lot!

1. Location: This is very important as you need the perfect spot to maximize your fun. Maybe parking up close and personal to the stadium is what floats your boat but be cautious, this will equal a pretty bad traffic jam on your way home. If you brought your patience, then no need to worry. If you are the type that likes to avoid traffic, try to find a location within a decent distance to the stadium, but one that has a simple and easy route after the game.

2. Grill: Nothing screams good tailgate like having the best food on the lot. In order to the have the best food, you will need a nice portable grill to cook with. Best to find one that is portable but also quick, once the crowd is hungry, they don’t want to wait!

3. Games: Aside from eating, most tailgaters need some form of entertainment. I know at the tailgate I attend before UK football games, you can always find a game of cornhole going on as well as a football being tossed around. Some other popular tailgate games are Bolo and Washer toss.

4. Bond: My favorite part of tailgating is the bonding I get to do with other camps. For several years now we’ve been tailgating at the same location and during that time have formed friendships with those who were once considered complete strangers. Not only were we able to bond over our common fanship, but after several weeks of spending multiple hours together, you really get to know your fellow fans. Sports can be the great equalizer, with the ability to bring two complete opposites together.

If all else fails, just show up and someone in a tailgate will take you under their wing, invite you in for a hotdog and a cold beverage, because that is the spirit of the tailgate.
