Joker Phillips has been tight-lipped about who seems to be separating himself from the rest of the pack in the four man QB battle, but offensive coordinator, Randy Sanders, did all but spell it out after yesterday’s scrimmage.

Sanders said that “the older guys are still ahead.” The “older guys” being Maxwell Smith and Morgan Newton. Not only does he indicate that the two veterans have the edge, he makes it clear that between the two veteran QB’s, the decision is “pretty easy to say.”

The real “cat’s out of the bag” moment comes when he talks about how Smith and Newton have been doing in practice, saying:

“Max has really done a nice job. Morgan is working hard, is doing pretty well, but it’s obvious that he’s coming off shoulder surgery. Any time you miss six months or seven months of throwing, it’s going to affect you somewhat, and there’s no question that he’s still a work in progress coming back from that.”

So, there it is folks. All bets seem to be safe in saying that we will see Maxwell Smith’s name at the top of the depth chart when the season starts.
