Oakland left Knoxville with a stunning 89-82 upset over No. 7 Tennessee on Tuesday night.
The Grizzlies (6-5) were led by last season’s Summit League player of the year Keith Benson, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds.
With the victory, Oakland’s all-time record against top 25 opponents is now 2-25.
Tennessee (7-1) picked up 18 points and 13 rebounds from Brian Williams. Melvin Goins added 18 points and Tobias Harris chipped in 16.
The loss is another disappointing effort in front of a national audience for the Southeastern Conference.
A sweaty Bruce Pearl said after the game, “This was a combination of running into a good basketball team and not being able to handle success despite our best efforts to get our team excited about playing.”
