The first year of the Billy Gillispie Era was memorable due to strange non-conference losses, talks about “toughness”, the constant debate over the lack of zone defenses and losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Most Kentucky fans would prefer to label this season — and Gillispie’s other season — not as memorable but forgettable.

Hardly any Kentucky fans could forget the first evening of the 2008 SEC Tournament, when an F2 tornado stuck the Georgia Dome in Atlanta right before Kentucky was slated to play Georgia. With the game postponed until the next morning and played at Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum, the Wildcats lost in overtime to the unlikely SEC Tournament champion Bulldogs. Georgia’s victory was the first of three incredible wins within the span of about 30 hours.

Today the Athens Banner-Herald reports that ESPN is producing a documentary about the tornado and the Bulldog’s unlikely run to the tournament championship. The film is part of ESPN’s SEC Storied collection and is directed by former 30-For-30 director Rory Karpf.

The documentary is still in production. No word if Karpf has reached out to Gillispie or to former Wildcats Patrick Patterson, Ramel Bradley or Joe Crawford for interviews. It wouldn’t surprise me if they all had selective amnesia about the second-round SEC Tournament loss.
