When we interviewed Mike Leach Sunday night, we asked him what conference he would like to coach at next. He said:
”It sort of depends; the SEC is the best conference and the most exciting one from that standpoint. The thing is all those major conferences have good teams, exciting teams. And you know the 3 things that I look at as getting back in, I want a place that’s not just signing up to play football, I want a place that wants to win at football.
The other thing is, I want graduation to be important to them. When I got to Tech, we had the lowest graduation rate in the country, or one of the lowest because when we got there we were in the middle of academic probation. We wanted our guys to be competitive, compete in everything…[We wanted them to be competitive in the classroom]. A couple of degrees didn’t hurt me, so it’s not gonna hurt these kids either as far as I’m concerned.
Then the 3rd is, you know, I don’t want a revolving door at the top. You know where there are 7 or 8 administrators in 10 years. I want a place where it’s stable, where people are thrilled to be. And as the University has success, you want to celebrate the successes of everybody. You know, that way it’s bigger than you, it’s bigger than the individual, it’s bigger than football. Football’s important and that’s your role in it, but if somebody invents something, Volleyball wins a national championship, that way it’s exciting for everybody”
I asked him if he planned on being a Head Coach or Offensive Coordinator:
”No I plan to be a head coach. It depends, I don’t think anything is off the table; I’d discuss or listen to anything. This year’s been fun; the past 2 years have been fun. I’m in the middle of my career.”
