After going 2-4 over the first six games, the Wildcats hope to gain some form of movement on the offensive end. After having more punting yards (1809) than total offense (1374), you have to think there are not many positive things to say about Randy Sanders’ offense. Along with the offensive struggles, the defense has also had its own struggles by giving up 55 first quarter points.
But what can be the solution to the offensive problems?
Obviously, the quarterback is something that can’t be solved right now, because both that have been given an opportunity have had the same results. When you look at the run game, you see a lot of potential. After losing a veteran back last year and losing Raymond Sanders to injury to a couple of games this year, true freshman Josh Clemons has had to carry the load for the most part. By doing so, he has gained nearly 300 yards on just 65 carries and averages about 4.5 yards a carry. With the return of Sanders, and Clemons out for the season, the Wildcats may not to use the formation that is also used for the mascot in order to get opponents out of place.
Who can catch?
That is the question a lot of fans, and probably receivers coach Tee Martin. is asking himself. Despite being the leading receiver, La’Rod King is also one of the receivers who have the most drops this season as well. With no run game, La’Rod King needs to be more productive than what he has been the first six games. However, the tight end position has been no where in sight and has took away a chance for the short passing game to develop.
How can the defense get off the field early?
Besides the forced fumble early against South Carolina, the Wildcats D has not been able to get the ball back for the offense. However, due to stamina issues, there are not a lot of complaints about new defensive coordinator Rick Minter’s defense led by leading tacklers Danny Trevathan and Winston Guy. However, one big thing the Wildcats need to improve on tremendously is getting deep often. The secondary has allowed at least 13 yards or more on average every catch, and has allowed nearly 7 yards on every carry.
The big question the Wildcats need to ask themselves is how can they win ball games. With basketball becoming a closer date than what the football team would want, a lot of the high spirits have gone away, and Joker Phillips has been put on the “hot seat.”
