Memorial Gym: A Rupp Creation

The Cats travel to Nashville tomorrow to face the #17 ranked Commodores in a SEC East battle.Memorial Gym is a tough place to play. There will be a raucous crowd making it the loudest place the Cats have played all season.

The benches are located in the endzone. Yes, behind the basket. It would be like sitting in my football seats trying to coach a game. It is always the first thought I have when the Cats go to Nashville. Well, getting a win in football is first, and then I think about those benches. It changes the way the game is coached, which effects the way the game is played. The bad thing is it was Kentucky’s fault the benches are there.

Adolph Rupp complained of the benches being on the side. The basketball floor is about 3 feet higher then the first row of seats, which is where the benches were located.Rupp wanted to be on the playing floor, so the next best place to put the benches was in the endzone. John Calipari will be looking at the backsides of his players and have to scream the length of the floor for his players to hear him all because Coach Rupp wanted to be on the floor.

This is a huge game for both teams and Vanderbilt, according to Steve Lappas, is the favorite to pull the upset on the Cats. All because of that gym, with the benches behind the baskets.
