Meet Jacob "Boogie" Hogan – The Other Side Of DeMarcus Cousins

Earlier today we reported that the Sacramento Kings have discussed the possibility of sending DeMarcus Cousins down to the D-League. Why? Simple, to give him time to attempt to get control of what appears to be some issues on how he handles the day to day career of professional basketball.

Boogie’s “problems” were documented throughout the off-season as a concern for NBA teams and may be the reason three teams passed on Cousins before he went fifth to the Kings.

Well here at the Big Blue Nation, we all know there’s a completely different side to the man known as Boogie, and once again DeMarcus showed that tender side on Christmas day.

During the 2009 fans traditional camp out to purchase Big Blue Madness tickets, DeMarcus Cousins met Jacob Hogan, a seven year old who immediately grabbed Boogies heart.

DeMarcus walked up to Jacob.

“We threw some football and played basketball, and then we had some Capri Suns,” Jacob says. “I had one and he said, ‘Will you go get me one?’ So I went and gave him one.”

Later, the two played a pickup game with Josh Harrellson, Jon Hood and other UK players. DeMarcus blocked a couple of Jacob’s shots, but his two key plays were a bounce pass to Josh, which he dunked, and the aforementioned shot.

“I had the ball and I was just laughing,” Jacob said. “He had his hands out like, ‘Bring it on.’”

Jacob heaved the ball, and DeMarcus tilted his head back and watched the shot rip through the net. Jacob’s probably one of few, if any, 7-year-olds who’ve scored on DeMarcus.

Since then, the two have been what Boogie calls, “homeboys”.

The two reconnected during the blue and white scrimmage. DeMarcus saw Jacob in the stands near the tunnel leading to the locker room at halftime and gave him his Gatorade towel.

At the end of the game, DeMarcus handed over his white headband.

“He stopped when the game was over and took his headband off, and he said, ‘Here buddy,’” Lana said. “Jacob was like, ‘Ew!’ because it was soaked.”

Jacob, always prepared, had another Capri Sun for DeMarcus.

Seven-year-old Jacob Hogan will get a number of gifts this year, but he’s already opened his favorite: an autographed picture of DeMarcus Cousins wishing his special fan a Merry Christmas.

The Hogans display the photo prominently on their Christmas tree.

“Some people might say, ‘It’s a picture,’” said Lana Hogan, Jacob’s mother and a kindergarten aide at the Early Learning Village.

“Yeah, it is just a picture, but it’s not the big of it. It’s the thought that came in this little package that has totally made this child’s day.”
