As the 1st annual Ultimate Indoor Football League Playoffs are fastly approaching, the Eastern Kentucky Drillers are tryiing to stay in the hunt for a first round home game.
The Drillers, who have the #1 defense in the UIFL, are undefeated at home and play last 2 out of 3 in Pikeville’s Expo Center.
Their first challenge is the Johnstown Generals, who are trying to sneak into the playoffs, but are a game out of the 4th and final spot.
The final two games of the regular season pit the league’s top defense vs. the top offense in Jared Lorenzen’s Northern Kentucky River Monsters.
I spoke to Marcus McClinton, former Kentucky All SEC Safety, about the playoff scenario and how Jared Lorenzen factors into the equation.
“We’re not worried about playing Jared,” said McClinton. “We just have to change some things defensively and try to stay away from a lot of man to man coverage.”
Marcus also spoke about how important it is to stay undefeated at home.
“It would be big to go undefeated at home for our fans,” McClinton said. “We have so much confidence playing in front of our crowd.”
“Our goal is to win out the rest of the season, and I think we can do that.”
Marcus has been tearing it up defensively, intercepting 5 passes in the last two games.
The Drillers’ combination of McClinton, David Jones and Jason Conner in the defensive backfield has become a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.
This Monday night will be a nightmare for Johnstown, and I am sure they will be getting tired of seeing the #1.
