Lorenzen and Abshire Lead River Monsters to Win Over Rivals

Former University of Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen has been on a roll as of late in the UIFL, winning the Offensive Player of the Week Award 3 times. He was in good form this past Saturday as well, throwing 5 touchdowns and running in a 6th in leading the Northern Kentucky River Monsters to a 59-42 over rival Eastern Kentucky.

Despite leading 30-14 at the half, the River Monsters had to hold off several comeback attempts from the Drillers. Al Holland (EKU) matched Lorenzen Touchdown for Touchdown in the second half, constantly bringing Eastern Kentucky to within a TD in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Holland finished with 6 total touchdowns including 3 rushing TDs. Holland hooked up with former UK Wildcat E.J. Adams for the Drillers first touchdown of the game.

While the QBs battled back and forth, the game was stolen by Butch Abshire (University of the Cumberlands). Abshire caught 2 touchdown passes and came up with the game sealing interception in the end zone with under a minute to play.

The win avenges the River Monsters only loss on the season and moves Northern Kentucky to 7-1 on the season. The Drillers fall to 4-4 on the year. These two will meet one more time in the last game of the season in Pikeville on May 28th.

Fans of the Drillers will be able to see their game against the Canton Cougars live on WYMT-TV on April 30th. Coverage begins at 7:30 with kickoff set for 7:40.
