Basketball

Looking ahead

”Hey, I see someone who thinks Vandy should’ve been ranked 7th.”

Apparently, someone on the Cleveland State basketball team is a Kentucky football fan, because the Vikings (really? In Tennessee?) smacked the 7th-ranked (even more really?) Commodores in the face today at Annoying Baseline Benches Coliseum, winning by 13. Granted, the ‘Dores didn’t have Festus Ezeli, but a 13-point win isn’t a fluke. I didn’t watch the game, but I assume the student section was full of whimsy. Here are some chants:

Two bits, four bits, eight bits, a dollar
All for the Commodores, stand up and explain Adams’ Method of Apportionment!

Or maybe this old chestnut:

Jenkins! Jenkins! He’s our man!
If he can’t do it, we’ll go home and watch Big Bang Theory!

Moving on, let’s take a peek at a couple big games this week. One is the basketball team taking on Kansas in Madison Square Garden Tuesday night. The other is the football team *snicker* hoping to *chortle* steal a win *hehehe* at Geor-BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I’m sorry, I had a momentary lapse of composure. Forgive me. In all honesty, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see the team actually handle itself well, while still losing by several. That seems like a Joker Phillips thing to do. Blow a must-win game in horrific fashion, then have a strong showing against a BCS bowl team the following week, convincing those in power to keep you around for another season. Oh goody. I can’t wait.

But what about the basketball Cats? What do they have in store Tuesday? It will be an early top 25 matchup that gives both teams a chance to make a statement. Kentucky can flex its muscle and handle a solid opponent, and Kansas can give the Cats a good game and prove they are still a force to be reckoned with.

The talent is heavily in UK’s favor, but Kansas has a slight edge in experience, and by experience I mean “older players”, not “players who mattered at all last year”. If UK shuts down Thomas Robinson inside, I think the perimeter defenders can more than handle themselves against Travis Releford and Tyshawn Taylor. The Jayhawks had 30 assists in the win over Towson, so shutting down the passing lanes will be key. Still, I think UK has the length to do so. The Cats also have too many weapons to defend. Kentucky needs to capitalize on any transition opportunities as well.

My predictions? It’s a fairly close one up until about 10 minutes left in the game, then UK goes on a nice run and takes it by 12 to 18 or so. The only way I see Kansas winning is if Joker gives the pregame speech, after which Kentucky takes the floor and shoots on the wrong goal for an entire half.

See you at the chat on Tuesday.
