Lacey Delaying Decision till After Derby Classic

Trevor Lacey is going to take a little extra time to see how everything pans out.

Lacey’s original date to announce was today, and then the date was moved to the 22nd.

Now that has changed again.

Butler coach Jack Doss said he talked to Lacey on Monday afternoon and Lacey told him he won’t announce his college decision until after he returns from playing in the April 22 Derby Festival Basketball Classic in Louisville.

The timing may not be a coincidence.

When’s the deadline for college underclassmen to declare for early entry to the NBA Draft? April 24, two days after the Derby Classic game. The deadline to withdraw is May 8. Which of the schools on Lacey’s list of five finalists has a player who could decide to turn pro early and could impact Lacey’s decision?

That would be Kentucky, which already signed the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for the third straight year in the early period. Adding Lacey would be icing.

UK freshman point guard Brandon Knight has yet to announce whether he’ll turn pro early or return to Kentucky. Knight and Lacey don’t play the exact same position – Knight’s a true point and Lacey’s more of a shooting guard – but the Kentucky backcourt could start to get crowded if Knight and Doron Lamb return and Lacey signs.

Kentucky already has signed another point guard for next season in Marquis Teague, rated by ESPN as the No. 7 overall prospect in the class of 2011. UK coach John Calipari showed a year ago with John Wall and Eric Bledsoe that he doesn’t mind playing two point guards at the same time.

Lacey’s good enough to play alongside Knight and Teague, but he may be waiting until after the NBA deadline to see if Knight is going or staying.

Despite Lacey’s statement last week that only he and his high school coach know where he’s going, Doss said Monday he’s still in the dark like everyone else.

My guess is if Lacey was going to Alabama or Auburn this date change probably wouldn’t have happened.

So, if Knight goes, Kentucky gets Lacey.

If Knight stays, Lacey goes to Alabama.

Just a hunch, but it makes sense.
