Samford has a signed contract to play three basketball games against Kentucky the next three seasons, with two of those games at Rupp Arena in Lexington and the final one here in Birmingham at either the Pete Hanna Center on the Samford campus or at the BJCC Arena downtown.

Newton came to Samford after serving as the director of basketball operations at Kentucky under head coach John Calipari.

“Martin was the catalyst” for the deal, Samford coach Jimmy Tillette said.

The series will start this season on Dec. 20 when Samford plays at Kentucky and will continue with early season games during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
