Kentucky – The Next Six Days

As we quickly move towards the culmination of the 2010-11 football season with the BCS National Championship Game, it made me reflect on the previous several days and the upcoming six days for the University of Kentucky Athletics program.

As dismal as the last six days have been, the football program, the mens and ladies basketball programs, all have critical objectives over the next six days.

THE LAST SIX DAYS:

– Tuesday: The women’s basketball team started it off with a loss at Cameron Indoor Stadium against the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils.

– Thursday: Lady Cats faced Arkansas, their second Top 25 team in three days and once again, they faced their SEC foe on the road in Fayettville. The end result was the same as the Cats lost their first SEC game of the season.

– Friday: UK was informed by the NCAA that the second and final appeal of Enes Kanter had been denied and the original decision of permanent ineligibility was upheld.

– Friday: John Calipari and the University of Kentucky withdrew their scholarship offer to recruit DeAndre Daniels, ending several days of recruiting drama.

– Saturday: Kentucky travels to Georgia for the opening game of SEC play, losing in a tough fought game to the Dawgs.

– Sunday: Matthew Mitchell and his Wildcats opened SEC play at Memorial Coliseum as Georgia ended Kentucky’s 25 game home winning streak and the Cats lost three in a row for the first time since the 08-09 season.

THE NEXT SIX DAYS:

– Tuesday: Kentucky comes home to the friendly confines of Rupp for their SEC home opener against Auburn. Not a must win, but starting 0-2 in the SEC East could be a tough hole.

– Thursday: Coach Mitchell and team host the South Carolina Gamecocks as they attempt to end their three game losing streak and get their first win in the SEC.

– Saturday: Kentucky has their second SEC home game as the LSU Tigers (9-7, 1-0 SEC) come into Lexington.

– Saturday: One of the more critical decisions for the 2011 season of Kentucky football will be finalized. Randall Cobb and Danny Trevathan will make their final decision whether to enter the 2011 NFL Draft or to stay another year at Kentucky. This could happen anytime between now and then, but by end of day Saturday, the team and the Big Blue Nation should know the future of two of Kentucky’s MVP’s from this years team.

– Sunday: The critical six day period ends as Kentucky welcomes SEC West opponent Mississippi State to Memorial Coliseum. Coach Mitchell and team could potentially have the chance to even their SEC record.

As hard as it was to swallow the results of the last six days, the next six could be just as sweet. The key for that to happen is to come away undefeated, both the men and the women, and have Randall Cobb and Danny Trevathan both decide to return for 2011.

Go Cats!!!
