On the surface, Poythress, who is a 2012 prospect out of Clarksville (Tenn.) Northeast High School, looks very similar to Jones. They are both in that 6-foot-8, 220-pound range and play the power forward position. When you look a little deeper, however, they are different type players.
Poythress is a more explosive athlete than Jones, and Poythress is at his best when he is not a primary scorer or playmaker for his team. Instead Poythress thrives on cleaning up plays as an offensive rebounder and scoring down along the baseline. He doesn’t possess the ball handling and passing skills and feel for the game as a playmaker that Jones has. Poythress does have a feel for finishing off plays going towards the rim and is a good rebounder in traffic.
Defensively Poythress is more of a playmaker than Jones because of his higher level of athleticism. Jones is primarily a positional defender while Poythress is also a good positional defender he is more of a shot-blocking threat than Jones.
As for their versatility, both prospects are best suited to guard the four position and are not what I would label multi-positional defenders. Offensively, Jones is much more versatile because of his superior skill level and feel for the game with the ball in his hands. Jones is a decision-maker with the ball while Poythress is more of a single-minded finisher or make-the-easy-pass player.
At a comparable stage, Poythress is the better athlete while Jones is the much better skill player. As prospects, I’d give the edge to Jones because the benefits of his skill level are larger and more rewarding than Poythress’ edge in explosiveness.
