He is the Number 1 rated player in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is the top candidate for Mr Football in the Bluegrass State.
For Kentucky and Coach Joker Phillips, four-star recruit Lamar Dawson is more then that, he’s an example of the talent required to move Kentucky to the top half of the SEC East.

Talent like Dawson is the difference between Kentucky and the rest of the SEC, the talent gap is obvious and this is one area Joker Phillips will continue to be challenged to improve.
Lamar, a 6-2, 230 lb Inside Linebacker, runs a 4.6 in the 40 yard dash and is rated as the 101st best overall player in the country, number 3 at his position.
Dawson’s current list of schools looks like a “Who’s Who” of College football programs with Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee, Florida, USC, Michigan and Oregon.
Most recently, he took an official visit to Oregon and he has an unofficial visit to Gainesville for the Florida – LSU game this weekend.
He’s not been to Kentucky recently — something that must drive UK recruiting coordinator Chuck Smith to insomnia. However, he will watch the Cats host Georgia on Oct. 23.
“Recruiting is still fun. I get a lot of calls from coaches and media people, but I still like it a lot,” Dawson said. “I don’t see my list of schools changing.”
His decision could be made in early January at the U. S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Dawson still does not have an official invitation, but he will be in the bowl game.
“There is a possibility I could do it at the game,” Dawson said about committing during the nationally televised contest. “I really don’t know, but that is a possibility.”
For Joker and the Cats, the next step starts right here, in the trenches called recruiting. On his visit to Oregon, Dawson said, “I was probably the most impressed with the fans and the facilities. That’s what I really liked.”
Coach Brooks said one of the areas UK must improve, if they expect to enhance recruiting and take the next step, is in the area of facilities.
For Kentucky, it’s easy to raise money when it comes to basketball, but for the Cats on the gridiron, that’s a different challenge.
