Is it that bad?

Hi friends, how are you this evening? That bad huh? Hey well at least you aren’t a Red Sox fan today…..oh you are? My bad well uh…..okay, lets just get down to business.

Five long weeks ago the internet was filled with positivity and dreams of bowl games for the University of Kentucky Wildcat football team. Cut to 4 games later….well, I don’t think I could say the same.

After what some might call dreadful play over the first four football games, it leaves Cat fans with little to pull for. Though we are all big blue fans, and will cheer on the blue till the end, is the Kentucky football situation truly that bad?

All over the radio, twitter and facebook I’ve heard and seen several comments regarding the employment of Joker Phillips. I’ve heard a few, let’s say “unfriendly” comments concerning some of the players on the team, and it seems like all hope is lost.

I’m here to help put it all in perspective, no need to fret just yet. This is Joker’s second year, and he’s only four games in. Unfortunately Joker was not given a fair shake as a coach in waiting, and came in with great expectations. What people need to remember is that one of the best, up and coming stars in the NFL left our very own Wildcat team. Randall Cobb was the heart and soul of this squad, just try to remember watching one game last year, and how many times you were bowing down and praising the Legend of Cobb. I know it’s hard to remember, but any team losing someone of that caliber is going to leave a big hole.

Another reason not to give up on the Cats is the recruiting. Currently Jokers incoming class for next year is ranked 20th in the nation. I know, I know, this ranking probably won’t stick, but you have to acknowledge that he is going out and bringing in higher talent than Kentucky fans are used to seeing. Give him time to learn his lessons and help the kids get better. A team in the SEC that may not be full of 5 stars takes time to develop. As much as Alabama and Auburn will never be Kentucky basketball, Kentucky will never be Alabama and Auburn football.

As a Kentucky football fan you hope to be competitive (and I think in the coming years we will) and you hope to have a decent season and a bowl game. Every fews years you hope to have a special season and win more games than you are supposed to, and go to a bigger bowl. The bottom line is, you have to give Joker a chance. Turning on the coach does not benefit the team or Kentucky football future.

If next year, Joker starts off the season just like this one, then everyone can whine and say I told you so, but I just ask that you give him one more year to prove what he can do.

Go Cats!
