Interesting Words from Knight. No, the OTHER Knight…

I am out of town this weekend and told my editors I would be unable to post any articles (I know you’ve missed them terribly), but I read an article this morning I just had to share. I would link it (it was in the Indianapolis Star), but it was in the print edition and I can’t find it in the online edition. Maybe that was intended.

The article was by former Indiana & Texas Tech head coach Bobby Knight. You may remember Knight as erroneously saying of Coach John Calipari “You see we’ve got a coach at Kentucky who put two schools on probation and he’s still coaching. I really don’t understand that.” (source) It was erroneous of course, because neither UMass or Memphis were on probation. They had a season vacated.

Anywho, in this article (page A13 in the “Opinion” section of the April 2-3 edition), Bob Knight gives “A Coach’s Guide to the Final Four” in which he states
“The NCAA requires teams to hold one practice that is open to the press. During that practice, of course, teams can’t do anything of a strategic nature. … Once there in front of the cameras – and scouts from opposing teams – we’d just run simple running and shooting drills.”
Hmmm. It seems to me I’ve heard of a great coach doing that before.

Knight also states in the article,
“To stay focused, we usually stayed in a quiet hotel other than the one assigned to us by the NCAA. The assigned hotel we’d use for alumni or athletic department personnel. This would allow us to concentrate on our objective: winning.”
Yes, we have heard great coaches do that too.

You know, for all of Bob Knight’s disgust with John Calipari, “the General” seems to share some strategic similarities with Coach Cal. And I’ll bet that just burns Bobby Knight.
