How Many Scholarships for 2011?

With all of the recruiting talk this week, it seems like everyone is wondering if we will have enough scholarships for the 2011 class. NCAA allows 13 scholarships for any given year. Lets break down who will be returning, leaving, and won’t have a scholarship next year. Then maybe we can figure out exactly how many spots will be open.

Returning Players on Scholarship
Terrence Jones
Brandon Knight
Doron Lamb
DeAndre Liggins
Darius Miller
Jon Hood
Stacey Poole Jr.
Eloy Vargas

Graduating
Josh Harrellson

Leaving
Enes Kanter

Pulled Scholarship
Jarrod Polson

Harrellson is a given since his elgibility will be up after this year. Everyone knows Enes Kanter’s situation, and in my opinion even if he gains elgiblity he is probably bolting for the NBA. Jarrod Polson was granted a scholarship for this year because of only having 10 on scholarship. He was a walk on so he will probably lose his athletic scholarship next year. Now the newcomers.

Signed LOI
Marquis Teague
Mike Gilchrist
Anthony Davis
Kyle Wiltjer

Possible Commitment
Trevor Lacey
DeAndre Daniels

We have 11 scholarship players right now, minus 3, equals 8. Add the 4 that have signed LOIs and that comes to 12. That would mean either Lacey and Daniels would be 13. I am guessing the Daniels ship has sailed since he did not want to play this year. I will go with Trevor Lacey being the 13th scholarship and that would round out our 2011 roster. Now of course this could all change by the end of the year if there isn’t a NBA Lockout and Terrence Jones decides to take his talents to the NBA. I guess we will cross that bridge when we get there.
