The Combs brothers discuss everything ranging from the hollers of Hazard to SEC football. Some of their statements are crazier than others (and those are the ones I like). Recently Ira Combs, Oscar’s brother, stated that Joker Phillips and the University of Kentucky should end its seasonal football series with the ol’ red birds. I understand all of the financial arguments for UK to drop the series, but I think this goes a little deeper than money.

Living in Louisville for the past 4 years, I learned that the Louisville football program won something called an Orange bowl around the late 1990’s. This was a proud moment for all 30,000 Louisville fans in the entire world. In fact, the town was so pumped they held a parade every day for an entire month. 28 vacant parades later, Louisville football seemingly was on top of the world. They had a glass bowl filled with rotten citrus fruit and more celebratory banners than actual fans.
They also dominated in-state rival Kentucky for 4 straight years. It seemed as though, nothing could stop the cards. That was until Kentucky quietly turned the corner, rebuilt its program from the ground up, and began a 4 game win streak of its own against the Cardinals. Kentucky resurrected itself from the grave, started going to bowl games and was winning the majority of them. What a difference 4 years can make.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So by definition, continuing this series is pure insanity. Kentucky plays in the greatest football conference in the nation and a team like Louisville plays in the worst football conference in the nation. While Kentucky may not be the best team in its conference, they still deserve to play a team of equal stature. And Louisville anymore just doesn’t cut it (that is unless we’re talking about cheese).
Translation: Kentucky needs to drop Louisville off the schedule and schedule a higher quality team that’s not from a 2nd rate football conference. This way they can benefit from a national perspective. Let’s face it; Kentucky beating UofL year in and year out does them no good. It would be like the United States defeating the French in a military war. What? Are you going to brag about it?
Ira suggested UK play Penn State and Miami instead of Louisville. What is this, the 1980’s? UK needs to schedule some perennial heavy weights. And while Virginia Tech is the ACC BCS representative by default of being the least worst, I say UK shoots even higher.
Let’s start with Ohio State. There couldn’t be a better time to play the buckeyes? They are without a real head coach and will be in the midst of a down/rebuilding year. UK can definitely march into Columbus and lose at the absolute last second. That could totally happen! Or UK could fly across the nation and play Pac-10 powerhouse USC. If memory serves me correct, I believe they are in the 2nd year of a modern day death penalty. If UK does in fact lose badly, cat fans can rest assure that it won’t be televised for anyone to have seen it.
If by chance Kentucky does in fact win this replacement game, they would hold bragging rights until the end of time. So, in all cases this is a win/win situation. But, If Ohio State or USC wouldn’t be able to play UK, then who could be a 3rd option? I wonder if UCF would give UK the honor of playing them. One can only hope to play a team that great.
