You may remember former Safety Matt Lentz out of Simpsonville, SC. His football career ended due to a series of concussions, and his remaining time with UK was spent as a volunteer coach.
As it turns out, a friend of his talked Lentz into going to a Cincinnati Reds open tryout after tossing and hitting some balls. Out of 150 athletes, Cincinnati chose Lentz to sign a minor league contract. Brad Meador, Reds regional scouting supervisor, said of Lentz’ performance:
”He has baseball tools that you’re looking for — a lot of athleticism, a big strong body and he’s physical. With him not playing the last four years while playing football, his baseball skills are what he needs to work on. He needs to get a lot of at-bats in a short period of time, but just being the athlete that he is, he’s intriguing. He’s got a pure stroke. Just the way he handled a wood bat was impressive.”
(source)
Congratulations Matt!
