Lexington Police were called to the home of UK women’s basketball coach Matthew Mitchell on Wednesday night.
Several members of his UK Hoops team sneaked into Mtichell’s quiet neighborhood and set off firecrackers in front of his house to celebrate Coach Mitchell’s 40th birthday.

They were bad, it was very, very frightening,” Mitchell said of the team prank, tongue planted firmly in cheek. “I felt like I was under siege.”
Several players also decorated his black Chevy Tahoe with phrases like “40 is the new 20” and “Honk, I’m 40!”
It was the second straight year that UK’s players have pulled a prank on Mitchell in time for his big day.
Freshman Jennifer O’Neill, one of the culprits who was later invited in for hot chocolate by the coach’s wife, Jenna, said it was fun.
“It was exciting, like an adrenaline rush, you didn’t want to get caught, but you wanted to see his face,” she said. “We just wanted to do something special for him.”
Mitchell said if his team wanted to do something special for him it could have practiced harder on Thursday.
