Don’t drink the UNC "Not Kool-Aid"

As a college basketball fan I must say I am truly dumbfounded by all the confused top 25 voters out there. We have seen UNC get 30 of 31 first place votes in the coach’s poll and 62 of 65 1[SUP]st[/SUP] place votes in the newly release AP poll. Did I miss something? Wasn’t North Carolina a mediocre team for the most part last year? I’ll answer that, YES. UNC’s best argument for #1 is that they return everyone from last year. Let’s look at last year then.

Ol’ Roy’s Tar Heels last year lost to Minnesota, Vandy, a terrible Illinois team, a struggling Texas team, Georgia Tech…by 20, Duke..twice..by a combined 23 points and finally UK. They’re best wins last year? A good home win against Duke later avenged in the ACC tourney championship game and a UK win by 2 at home, which was also avenged in their elite 8 rematch. So to recap, they lost 8 games total last year, lost in the ACC championship game by 20 and lost in the elite 8 to UK and only had 2 quality wins all year. Why are they preseason #1 again?

Is it because Harrison Barnes is coming back? I don’t argue he’s a really good player, but he isn’t THAT good. Let me rephrase, is he THAT much better than Terrence Jones or Jared Sullinger? They are returning sophomores on highly ranked teams also.

Speaking of Ohio State, why aren’t they #1 preseason favorite? I would accept them being unanimous over UNC. Ohio State had the #1 overall seed in the tourney last year and they are returning Craft, Buford and Sullinger as well as 5 freshen that were a part of the #8 overall recruiting class. Sully supposedly has lost weight and will more than likely be national player of the year as he will dominate the Big 10 on a weekly basis. But Ohio State gets very little love.

Uconn is another victim of the UNC slob knobbing. Uconn won the NCAA national title last year (it hurt to write that) and yet in the preseason polls that year, they did not receive a single vote in the Coaches poll. I don’t mean just a 1[SUP]st[/SUP] place vote, I mean NO VOTES AT ALL. They only received 8 votes total in the AP Poll. The voters are sometimes confused, right Kemba?

UNC also fooled the selection committee last year into getting a #2 seed. The committee must have liked the fact that UNC won the ACC regular season title but if that were the case they should have awarded Kyrie Irving’s foot a #2 seed. UNC lost by close to 20 points the day before they got that undeserved #2 seed. At the same time UK beat an eventual #2 seed, Florida (don’t get me started) to win the SEC tourney championship and received a belittling #4 seed. UK had only one more loss than UNC yet received the toughest road to the Final Four than any other #4 seed (and still made it. Suck on that, Selection Committee).

The voters have done this before. Remember Kansas 2 years ago? I never understood why people thought they were the nation’s unanimous #1 team. Northern Iowa helped me in my argument that year.

UK returns 3 players that averaged a combined 37 ppg last year and brings in the next #1 NBA draft pick and 3 other 5-star freshmen. I think I have made enough points to argue the fact that UNC this year shouldn’t be a clear #1 in EVERYONE’s eyes, but what do I know?
