“Dang, it feels good,” the newest Kentucky commitment said on Sunday night. “It feels great to be a Wildcat.”
After an impressive outing at Kentucky’s Skills Camp on Sunday, the 6’2″receiver from Stone Mountain, Georgia’s Stephenson High School came away with an offer from Joker Phillips and his staff.
“I told Coach Phillips, ‘I’m ready when you offer,’ before I left campus,” Sweat said. “They gave me the offer and I pulled the trigger. We both just wanted me to go home and talk it over with my parents to be sure it was the right decision.”
Sweat was already aware of all the cyberspace battles and if he was or was not committed to the ‘Cats. “Everybody had their stories mixed up,” he laughed.
But either way, the soon-to-be senior was just blessed with the Kentucky offer and his opportunity to return to where he is originally from.
Sweat moved to Georgia from Kentucky when he was a toddler, and he admitted, the true race was between Kentucky or Louisville when it came down to things.
“Before I even committed I knew I was going to play in the state of Kentucky. It was either Kentucky or Louisville, whichever came first with the offer.”
He raved about the homely atmosphere that UK presented throughout the conversation, as he felt it was in his best interest to go where he felt at home.
“Kentucky is just home for me. That’s all I can say, it’s just a great home and I can’t say no.”
It also helped that his cousin, Jeremy Jarmon, a Kentucky player, typically boasted about Kentucky and what it had to offer.
“Jeremy talks about Kentucky all the time, and that just made it feel even better.”
With the unexpected commitment on Sunday, it is obvious Sweat had to have done really well in his respective drills during the camp. He acknowledged that a lot of people were talking about him, though.
“All I heard was people talking about speed. I just kept working harder and harder. I wanted the offer so bad,” he explained. “I also heard people say they were impressed with my ball skills.”
When it came down to it, all the coaches really made Sweat feel in the right place.
“Coach Tee Martin and Coach Sanders talked to me a lot, and then I got to spend a lot of time with Coach Joker too,” the receiver said. “They all made me feel right at home.”
With that being said, he also announced that he would not pay much attention to any other schools for other possible visits. “I’m all Kentucky,” Sweat assured.
Now Sweat hopes to make it back to Lexington to attend some games and witness the great Big Blue Nation.
“I will probably go back up and watch Kentucky play Louisville, and if Kentucky plays at Georgia next year, I will definitely try to make it. We’ll have to see though.”
Nonetheless, it seems that DeMarcus Sweat is feeling right at home at Kentucky and he is looking forward to future opportunities the Wildcats present to him.
