It may have been over 20 years ago, but it’s still fresh in the minds of UK faithful: the day that birthed “The Stomp” and “The Shot.” Though, it is a day we would all like to forget, one of the officials of that legendary game recently said he believes it could’ve played out differently.
Tom Clark, now a retired NCAA referee, worked the floor during that Kentucky/Duke game, saying:
“I will tell you if Timberlake gets up, starts a fight, then they are both pitched. Laettner did not have to throw a punch. He would have been pitched for initiating the situation. If (Timberlake) starts any type confrontation, they both are pitched. But there was no interruption in the game. The whole thing took about five seconds. Nothing was done by either team. It just happened and was not a game interrupter.”
Who is to say that would have solidified a better outcome? Although, it is a lot nicer to think about those final seconds winding down with Laettner riding the pine.
