It is coming down to the end of the game. Kentucky’s John Wall has just made his second free throw, and Vanderbilt is getting ready to take the ball out of bounds. Less then 3 seconds left! Wait a minute, Kentucky calls timeout?? At first I thought Vandy did, but then I found out they didn’t have any tiimeouts! I couldn’t believe it!! Coach Cal said that it was the worst time out he has ever called. He gave Kevin Stallings a chance to draw up a “Duke” play and try to beat the #2 team in the nation. They got the shot, by a frosted tips Australian, who had a gimme to take it to overtime. He luckily missed and the Cats win.
Now I know this is out there, but it is a conspiracy theory! Do you think Cal called that timeout on purpose, just to see how his team would react to the situation? I know that sounds crazy, but you think Cal’s ego wanted to do it? Or I guess I should say, could it do it? It was excellent practice and it is hard to imitate actual game speed in situations like that. It was a wonderful learning experience for the young Cats and a game that showed Patrick Patterson’s leadership on the floor is still existent in big situations. With a Coach that tells his players that wins are losses to try to motivate them to be better, I wouldn’t put it past him to show that he can make mistakes too. Showing his team that he can make mistakes, Cal showed his team that they can make mistakes too, and the team can still find a way to win. Calling the timeout was an error that didn’t hurt. In the long run, the end of the game situation probably helped the Kentucky Wildcats come March more than anything else.
