This week in Coach Cal’s Mailbag:
Take us into the locker room after Vandy. We are your players. What is your post-game message? Craig, Lexington, KY
Coach Cal – “When I walked in, what I said was really simple – You guys played great for 35 minutes. The last five minutes we all broke down. I’m trying to get them away from worrying about winning. Let’s worry about executing, let’s worry about finishing, and let’s worry about every possession matters.”
Great to see John Wall in the house for the Tennessee game. Did you have a chance to spend time with him? Did he have any words of encouragement for the team? – Alicia, Lexington, KY
Coach Cal – “It was great to see John. It was great for our fans to see him back home. We talked about the NBA and the trials and tribulations he’s going through as a player. We talked about our team – he watches all the games. We talked about individual players and I think he went in the locker room after the game and talked to individual guys.”
Who is your NBA MVP right now? – Scott, Toronto, Canada
Coach Cal – “My MVP in the NBA right now – there are three players, but the one that sticks out in my mind is Derrick Rose. He’s carried the team with Boozer out and with Noah out. He’s kept them going.”
How much does the Kentucky name help you out on the recruiting trail? – Rebecca, Madison, WI
Coach Cal – “Being at Kentucky has opened up many more doors for our recruiting and our staff than we’ve had in the past. But I want you to understand, the kids only know the last three years. They don’t know ’98, they don’t know ’96; they know nothing about those years. But their moms and dads know. The high school coach knows Kentucky. So it’s opened up many, many doors that have been closed to us in the past.”
I’m a die-hard UK fan on the West Coast. Can we expect to see the Pac-10 on your schedule in the future? – Brandon, Danville, CA
Coach Cal – “We played Washington this year; we played Portland in Portland this year. In next year’s schedule, I don’t think we’ll be able to get to the West Coast because we’ve got so many road games and things that we’re doing, but I like to play on the West Coast. Our fans are everywhere.”
