Camping with Kentucky Football

Joker Phillips and Kentucky Football is hosting a camp today at the Nutter Training Facility .

There had to be at least 100 campers that came out on a hot Memorial Day Sunday to show the Kentucky coaching staff what they could do.

They divided up into 6 or 7 groups, with each coordinator or coach putting the players through agility drills.

They broke for lunch around 1 and were going to do competition drills after eating, but it was a little too hot for me so I headed to the house.

I also got to sit through the introduction part of the day as Joker Phillips spoke to the group of campers about being a student first, a great member of the community second, and winning football games third.

He also spoke about learning a lot about a kid by looking into his eyes and into his soul. He also said he won’t offer a kid just because he has a good day at camp. He wants to learn who the kid is, how they interact with the kids in their school, and basically how they are as a person before they can be at the University of Kentucky to play football.

After Coach Phillips’ speech, Tommy Cook and Andre Woodson directed the players to the buses parked outside as they were jetted off to the Nutter Fieldhouse and Commonwealth Stadium for a tour of the facilities.

I was really impressed with Joker’s personality with the kids and the parents, and heck, he even took time to introduce himself to me and shook my hand.

I can see how Joker is looked upon as being a good recruiter, I just wish it carried over to the field more often.

My guess is there will be some offers after today’s camp, especially seeing that Kentucky only has 1 commit so far in 2013.
