On the Monday SEC teleconference, John Calipari was asked why he is so animated (I call it passionate) with his team. “This team’s upside is enormous,” Calipari said. “. . . I don’t think any team in America has got more upside.”
But it takes hard work to get the best out of players. Hard work-outs, taking away twitter accounts and even harsh words sometimes. “You’ve got to let them know what’s acceptable,” Calipari said. “If you accept mediocrity, you’re going to get (mediocrity) every single time. If you demand a lot, you’ll get a lot.”
I’ve received a lot of correspondence over the past week regarding Coach Cal’s captured moment with Terrence Jones that was heard around the world. For those of you that said you lost respect for Coach Cal, I think you should evaluate his statements. A look into what he is saying is that he does everything he does to make our team better and to make his players better individually. He see’s the potential and wants them to each be the best they can be.
“He’s young. He doesn’t play with the kind of desire and fight he needs to the whole game. When he does play that way, people look at him and say, Wow! My job is to get him to play that way all the time and have that mentality. It’s very hard,” Coach Cal said about Terrence Jones.
“Oh, he’s a great kid,” the UK coach said. “I look at him and say, ‘I love you, you know.’
“He says, ‘Yeah, I love you, too.’
