Calipari is betting that the best talent will put the Kentucky Wildcats in the best position possible to win a national championship. As I have said before, I agree with the approach. I’m not sure I completely agree with a recent statement from Coach Cal that 4 year players at Kentucky equals the NIT but I think going after top recruits is the correct approach.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
“If you recruit guys who you know are going to be there for four years, you’ll probably be in the NIT, and that’s not a good thing at Kentucky,” he said. “You recruit the best players you can, and if someone is going to take them in the first round, I tell them to go.”
That puts you in the best position to get the best recruits the following year too. Regardless of what fans and analysts want, players want to go to the league. If a coach is sending players to the NBA, then new players will want to work under the guidance of that coach.
If you have the best talent you have the best chance to string 7 or 8 wins together. I argue that the talent of the players is more important to putting that win streak together than the experience of the players.
Most fans will agree that Kentucky’s chances of a championship look pretty good in the next two years with the #1 recruiting classes in the nation. Seems like bringing in #1 puts you in position to be #1. His approach isn’t bold, it’s innovative. I like it.
Go Big Blue!
