Calipari Will Play "Blocking Dummy" With Terrence Jones

The CATS are headed to Maui and I’m sure the players are excited to take in what Hawaii has to offer. Some of them might even be dreaming of surfing, hula dancing or a luau. Terrence Jones might want to borrow Randall Cobb’s shoulder pads as Coach Calipari has different plans.

Here’s an excerpt from the Portland Tribune..

[QUOTE=Portland Tribune]“In Hawaii, I’m going to beat him with a pad for two days,” Calipari promised. “He’s going to drive against me, and I’m going to be like a blocking dummy, trying to knock him down so he has to play through it. He’s strong enough to do it. His habit is, ‘You bump me and I’ll fade away.’ That’s because he’s a freshman.”

This is Calipari’s 20th season as a head college coach at Massachusetts, Memphis and Kentucky. He has had some great teams and some great players, including Marcus Camby at U-Mass. He knows potential when he sees it, and he sees it in Jones.

“I love coaching him,” Calipari said. “He’s responsive. He’s trying. He doesn’t always agree. He has answers – typical freshman. I told him the other day, ‘You have to start stepping up. Get this to another level.’ I think he’d rather be a point guard. He’s our best rebounder. Go rebound every ball, you know? I even tell him, ‘Get the rebound and you can bring it upcourt.’
“He’s a nice kid, a good teammate, but he’s just a baby. The minute the light goes on, that we’re not just playing, but you’re going to absolutely try to dominate somebody, to force your will on him, it’ll be like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ ”

Calipari compares Jones’ skills to those of Lamar Odom.

“But Lamar Odom’s a man,” Calipari said. “It takes time to get there.”
