On Monday Coach John Calipari went on a Portland, Oregon radio station and talked about the recruitment of Terrrence jones, along with some other subjects. Perhaps Cal went on there because he knows that some people believe there were shady techniques employed. Perhaps it was to rub it in a little. A little of both maybe? I think it was simply to set the record straight.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
Coach Cal said that All-American Terrence Jones called him about an hour after his initial verbal commitment to Washington and said “Cal, I made a mistake. I don’t know what I was doing.” Coach Cal then encouraged Jones to think about his decision and let him know that if he would make sure a scholarship was available while he made his final choice.
“When the young man calls you and says, ‘I made a mistake, coach, I want to reconsider this,’ it changed everything,” Calipari said. “If he had committed to Washington and that was the end of it, then we wouldn’t have done anything. But this was a unique situation now. I have never been in anything like this.”
Are Washington fans looking for a way to wipe UK and it’s fans off the face of the planet after reeling in two recruits that previously committed to UW? We couldn’t find any. For Calipari it’s as simple as this: “I don’t mind that Washington fans are upset and upset with me, … but I think Lorenzo knows and their staff knows this was not our doing. It is about (Jones) making a decision that was best for him not for fans and teammates. It is about what is best for Terrence Jones. I think at the end of the day that is what he tried to do.”
