Butler and Trevor Lacey win Third State Title in Four Years

If there is such thing as a high school dynasty in the state of Alabama, all fingers would point to Butler High School over the past five or six years, led by star Trevor Lacey.

It continued Friday night as they captured another state championship, this time defeating Anniston 44-39.

If reports are true about Butler shutting down after this school year, the Rebels went out on top, yet again. It is the third state championship in four years, to be exact.

However, this was not quite like previous championships for Butler.

They had to win the game a different way tonight: defense.

On a night where arguably the top unsigned recruit left in the Class of 2011 failed to score his usual, Lacey and his teammates defended their hearts out.

Lacey finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for the Rebels.

He also was named the tournament MVP.

Over the past week, it was obvious that Lacey was not accustomed to shooting on the new, college-style goals, unlike those found at Butler High School. It is a possible reason for Lacey’s uncommon games the past couple of nights.

But something else has been nagging him.

In fact, it’s the knee he injured last year that ultimately cost Butler a state championship, which would have been the forth straight for Butler.

Jeff Sentell caught up with Lacey after the game:
“It’s a hyper extended knee,” he said. “I was going to get an MRI after the season. I didn’t want them to tell me I needed surgery and favor it. I’ve been favoring it, though. I’ve been playing hurt all season. After that, I’ve been playing hurt all season. I haven’t been the same as far as quickness and athleticism after that.”
Nevertheless, Lacey has continued to play and he got the state championship he was looking for.

Now Lacey will begin to take his visits and conclude where he wants to attend college.

Where will he go?

Is he headed towards a tradition of winning and a life-long dynasty school that is beginning to become known for one-and-dones?

One dynasty to the next wouldn’t be bad at all, right?
