“It’s not really far from home (Willingboro) as you know, and my family (mother Jesse and dad Joe Canty) can it make to the games; they don’t have to fly anywhere to see me play.

“And, you can’t go wrong with (RU coach) Vivian Stringer. She’s a Hall of Famer and she’s got a lot of players in the WNBA. Plus, she’s one of the coaches that has been there from the start watching me (on the recruiting trail) since the very beginning.”

Canty will join the recruiting class for the Scarlet Knights that includes Neptune High’s two best players, Shakina Richardson, a 5-6 guard (rated No. 18 by ESPN’s HoopGirlz 100) and 5-7 guard Syessence Davis (No. 51), along with 6-3 forward Christa Evans from Jackson.

On the radar vying for Canty’s services was second-place finisher Kentucky as well as Penn State, Miami and South Carolina which were also in the mix down the stretch.

“It came down to Kentucky and Rutgers,” Canty said. “And, Kentucky’s a great school but I just felt more love at Rutgers. I got to talk to (current WNBA star and former RU guard) Cappie Pondexter and Matee (Ajavon, currently on the Washington Mystics) who played for Coach Stringer and they told me how Coach Stringer was both on and off the court.”
