Gene Chizik is in his second season at Auburn with a record of 13-5 (.722) and in his
fourth season overall with a record of 18-24 (.429). The Tigers’ offensive coordinator is
Gus Malzahn and the defensive coordinator is Ted Roof.
Joker Phillips is in his first season at Kentucky and overall. The Wildcats’ offensive
coordinator is Randy Sanders and the defensive coordinator is Steve Brown.[/LEFT]
[LEFT]WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN AUBURN HAS THE BALL
Cam Newton leads the SEC and ranks second in the country with a passer rating of
191.44. Newton has been impressive running the ball this season, leading the SEC and
ranking 36th nationally in rushing (fourth among quarterback), averaging 94.8 yards per
game. Auburn has one of the most experienced if not one of the best offensive lines in
the country, with four starters returning who have combined to make 129 career starts.
Kentucky leads the SEC and ranks eighth nationally in pass defense as the Wildcats
have limited their opponents to an average of 141.8 yards per game. Danny Trevathan
leads the Wildcats with 42 total tackles and eight tackles for loss. He is tied for second
in the SEC and tied for 24th nationally in tackles for loss. He charted a career-high 15
tackles at Ole Miss last week. Ricky Lumpkin has 3.5 tackles for loss in the first five
games, including a quarterback sack, and also has been credited with a quarterback
hurry. Luke McDermott leads the team with three sacks on the year.[/LEFT]
[LEFT]WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN KENTUCKY HAS THE BALL
Nick Fairley leads the SEC in both sacks (5.0) and tackles for loss (11.5), and has at
least 1.5 tackles for loss in every game this season. Josh Bynes led Auburn in tackles last
season with 104, and is leading the squad again this season. He currently has a teambest
31 tackles and has 3.5 tackles for loss, an interception, two pass break-ups and four
quarterback hurries. Aairon Savage is second on the team with 29 tackles, including one
for loss.[/LEFT]
[LEFT]Senior tailback Derrick Locke leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally in all-purpose
yards, averaging 181.4 yards per game. He has surpassed the 100-yard mark in either
rushing or passing yards in all five games this season. Randall Cobb contributes as a wide
receiver, quarterback, punt returner, kickoff returner and placekick holder. He leads the
team in receptions, is second in rushing, has returned a punt for a touchdown and has
thrown for two TDs, including one on a fake field goal. Mike Hartline is 11-8 (.579) in 19
career starts at UK. He ranks second in the SEC in passing yards per game (244.4) and
is third in total offense (251.6 per game). Chris Matthews has five TD catches, leading
the SEC in that category.[/LEFT]
[LEFT]SPECIAL TEAMS
Senior kicker Wes Byrum is just 34 points away from becoming Auburn’s all-time leading
scorer. He currently ranks fourth with 269 career points. Demond Washington ranks
seventh in the SEC averaging 26.0 yards per kickoff return, and had 126 kickoff return
yards against Arkansas State, which is the 12th best total in school history. Junior
Quindarius Carr has averaged 7.7 yards per punt return, which is seventh in the league.
Senior Ryan Shoemaker is sixth in the SEC averaging 38.9 yards per kick.
Ryan Tydlacka is in his second season as the starting punter. He averaged a personal-
best 50.5 yards per punt vs. Ole Miss, including a career-long 73 yarder. For the season
he ranks third in the SEC at 46.4 yards per punt. Joe Mansour has a league-leading
12 touchbacks this season. Craig McIntosh has handled field goals the last three games,
making 4-of-6 field goals and 9-of-10 extra points.[/LEFT]
