Basketball Recruits: When the Honeymoon is Over

With the AAU season in full swing and the second evaluation period now underway, we are hearing a lot of who Kentucky is watching and interested in, but we’re also hearing a lot about whose recruitment is… waning.

2012 guard Gary Harris told Jody Demling this weekend that UK’s recruitment of him has dropped to “a little bit here and there” and “nothing serious”. Likewise, 2013 guard Solomon Poole (Stacey’s younger brother) is not listing Kentucky as a school of interest, even though we know they have been in touch. And of course we reported here how 2012 guard L.J. Rose and UK are “no longer an item”.

Does that mean that these three will definitely not play at Kentucky? Of course not, any of them could commit to UK tomorrow, but with the transfer of Ryan Harrow, the glaring need for a guard in 2012 and possibly 2013 has relaxed. 2012 guard Rodney Purvis had said that Harrow’s transfer affected his recruitment as well.

I don’t envy the decisions these young men (or UK’s recruiting staff) have to make, but it does make for some interesting “reality-TV” type entertainment. And like a reader once told me, “Todd, you can’t get them all…” I know, and it’s better to have too many options than not enough.
