Baseball Stays Perfect, Sweeps Defending Champs

The Kentucky Baseball team stayed perfect Sunday beating the defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks 6-3 in front of 2, 570 fans on a beautiful day at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

The Wildcats used great pitching and timely hitting, two assets Kentucky fans are getting accustom to, and swept the #2 team in the country.

Luke Maile(pictured left) got the scoring started for Kentucky in the bottom of the 1st, as he hit a 2 run homer over the left field fence to make the score 2-0.

South Carolina answered back in the top of the 3rd as they plated a run off of Corey Littrell who ended up with the no decision.

The Gamecocks scored 2 more runs in the 5th off of Littrell to take a 3-2 lead, but Kentucky battled back in the bottom half with a Zac Zellers rbi basehit to left field to knot it back up at 3.

Littrell(pictured below) was relieved by Walter Wijas in the 6th and shut the door on the Gamecocks for two and a third.

The big inning for the Wildcats was the 6th as AJ Reed led off with a base hit. Thomas McCarthy walked and J.T. Riddle slapped a base hit to left to load the bases for senior Michael Williams.

Williams proceeded to hit a texas leaguer to right which scored Reed and McCarthy to put the Cats in the lead for good. Riddle ended up at third and Williams used good base running to slide safely into second. Riddle ended up scoring the final run on a wild pitch to make the score 6-3.

Sam Mahar relieved Wijas in the 8th to get one out on one pitch and then Trevor Gott recorded his 5th save, his 2nd in 2 days, to nail down the sweep for the Wildcats.

Walter Wijas picked up the win to go 2-0 on the season. Nolan Belcher of South Carolina took the loss.

The Wildcats look to extend their undefeated streak to 22 games as they travel to Cincinnati to play the Bearcats on Wednesday at 4pm.
