August 13, 1990 – A Special Day For UK

It was a normal day in the lives of most Americans. Out of bed, off to the office, maybe a last minute vacation, a run to the grocery store or an illness that kept you home.

As far as importance to the University of Kentucky, the athletic program or the Big Blue Nation, it was of no real relevance. Sure, maybe the Cats were in two a day football practice, preparing for what would turn out to be a 4-7 overall season record, 3-4 in the SEC East where they finished 5th.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

Little did Kentucky fans realize just how big of a day August 13 would turn out to be in the Big Blue Nation, and it all started way down South in Mobile, AL.

Monique Cousins knew just how important this date would be in her life. With the birth of little DeMarcus Cousins, she gained a son and at the same time, the Cats gained a super star.

The young man, affectionately known as ‘Boogie’, will not soon be forgotten by Cat fans. On the court, he was a beast, almost averaging a double-double in his Freshman year. Cousins earned first team All-American and was eventually drafted number 5 overall by the Sacramento Kings. Off court, he was, well, just ‘Boogie’.

So from all the members of the Big Blue Nation to DeMarcus ‘Boogie’ Cousins, Happy Birthday and thanks for the memories…

Boogie with maybe his most famous shot, against Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament Final Game where the Cats captured their 26 SEC Tournament Title.
