Former Kentucky Golfer Qualifies for U.S. Open

Mallory Blackwelder, a former golfer at the University of Kentucky, has qualified to compete in the 2012 Women’s U.S. Open.

Blackwelder, 23, is also the daughter of former UK golf coach Myra Blackwelder.

To qualify for the U.S. Open, Blackwelder had to finish third or better in the tournament hosted in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She finished third out of 69 contestants, with a 14-over-par.

It didn’t come easy for Blackwelder. She finished only one stroke ahead of both Joy Trotter and Rachel Rohanna. Here’s what Blackwelder had to say about the tournament, which is also the same venue that will host the U.S. Open:
”It was nerve-racking, but I’m thrilled,” Blackwelder told the Denver Post. “I bogeyed 16 but kept going. This is the most difficult course I’ve ever played. I missed by one last year. I’m glad I kept out here to qualify because I already know the tricks of the mountain.”
Anya Sarai Alvarez and Garrett Phillips will also be joining Blackwelder, as they finished tied for first place with a 9-over-par.

Blackwelder with start her journey in her first ever Women’s U.S. Open on July 7. The entire U.S. Open is from July 7-10.
