I just got off the phone with 2011 baseball commit Greg Fettes out of Lamphere HS in Michigan. Fettes was drafted in the 43rd round by the Detroit Tigers in this year’s MLB draft. He said he would not decide whether to go pro or attend UK until the end of the summer, after he receives an offer. He did say he is ‘leaning toward Kentucky’, and that he always wanted to go to college.
Fettes had offers from hometown schools Michigan and Michigan State, as well as Wabash Valley College, so I asked why he picked Kentucky. He said he liked the facilities and developed a good relationship with the coaches, and he added that he knew he could improve his skills at UK. Greg said the distance seemed just right, he could be far enough away from home but not too far. Coach Bohannon is handling his recruitment.
Greg owns about every baseball record at Lamphere High, or at least a part of them. For single season records, he is #1 in Home Runs (11), #1 in RBI (49), #2 in Runs Scored (44), #2 in strikeouts as a pitcher (77) and #4 in BA (.500). For career records, Fettes is #1 in Runs (142), #1 in RBI (135), #1 in Home Runs (27) and #2 in Hits (141). With all that success, I asked Greg if he was surprised he was drafted. He said he wasn’t surprised he was drafted, but he was pleasantly surprised that it was by the hometown Tigers.
Greg was selected as All-State and will be playing in the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association East-West All-Star Classic tonight. Ironically the game will be played on the Tigers’ home field.
File under “things you didn’t know about Greg Fettes”, he has two tattoos: one is a tribal and the other is a memorial to his grandfather. Grandpa would be proud, Greg.
